Farmed
NO*Arctic Dreamcat is a small Maine Coon farm located in Vesterålen, Nordland. The pedigree name NO*Arctic Dreamcat was approved in NRR, on 27.09.2022, but we first started with the pedigree name NO*Sortlandskatten on 26.02.2021, before we switched to a more international name.
The breeding was started with the Maine Coon breed, with health and temperament as the main focus. Our first litter was born 17.03.2022, we have litters once or twice a year. The kittens spend their first 14 weeks in our home as part of the family. They are well socialized with us humans, visitors and our other cats.
In our house, we have two adults and four children aged 10-18, so there's no shortage of attention and cuddles!
We have 5 females and 2 males in our breeding program:

Maine coon
The Maine Coon is a purebred cat of American origin. This is the world's largest domestic cat breed. The Maine Coon is considered the first cat breed from America. It is not known for sure how the breed originated, but there are several myths about it. One of the most common is from Maine and states that the cat originated from a cross between a cat and a raccoon (hence the name), which we now know is genetically impossible.
The cat probably originated through natural cross-breeding between Angora cats brought to Maine's ports by sailors, English cats brought by settlers in the 17th century, Scandinavian or Russian cats and short-haired American cats.
There is also a story that the Vikings brought Norwegian forest cats to America and mixed them with large American cats, a story we Norwegians like to relate to.
The Maine Coon cat is simply proof that he who is strongest and smartest survives. The Maine Coon cat is a working cat that is equipped to fend for itself in harsh environments. It is large and powerful. In the past, many cats had an extra toe, the polydactyl. They are often referred to as "lynx cats" because of the beautiful tufts on their ears. The cat originally comes from the state of Maine in the USA.
If you want a Maine Coon cat, you need to be aware that it wants to be involved in EVERYTHING you do and EVERYTHING that happens. They are very similar to dogs in their behavior. They love human contact and they thrive indoors. They get along well with other cat breeds, dogs, rabbits and other pets.
Before it drinks water, it scratches the floor or strikes the water bowl with its paw. This behavior is thought to be an instinct from when cats lived in cold North America. There they had to scratch away the snow and punch holes in the ice before they could drink water or catch fish. The Maine Coon cat has an amazing temperament. It is very special in its behavior. It is cheeky and can be downright nasty at times.
It is a large cat breed. A male normally weighs between 6-8 kg and females weigh 4-7 kg. There is a difference between summer and winter fur. There can also be a difference in the quality of the fur between outdoor and indoor cats. Outdoor cats have a thicker and greasier coat (the fat in the coat causes the water to bounce off!) The coat is often long (semi-longhair) but there are rarely any tangles in the coat. Brushing the coat at regular intervals is always a good idea, especially during shedding periods. That way, you won't have so much loose hair inside.
